Take stock
Before even starting the repair work, it is imperative to determine the origin of the crack. Did it suddenly appear? Has it changed? Has it already been repaired? The causes of the crack can be many, but they can determine the type of repair to favor.Prepare the crack
Before filling a crack, it must be prepared. Start by scraping the paint around the crack, then brush the repair area. With the brush, or a knife, try to knock off the most fragile pieces on the outside as well as inside the crack. Then, if possible, accentuate the crack using a triangular scraper. Thus the coating will have a better grip when dry. Brush the crack again and vacuum up to remove as much dust as possible. Finally, wipe with a damp sponge. This last step makes it possible to remove the last dusts, to identify possible weakened areas and to promote the setting of the coating.
Fill in the crack
To fill the crack, opt for a quality coating. Place a good amount on a spatula and then fill the crack. Make sure that the crack is full of plaster and therefore do not hesitate to "stuff". If air remains, the crack will reappear quickly after the work. You must apply several layers of plaster. The first arises in the direction of the crack, the second perpendicularly. Without waiting for the coating to dry completely, apply a strip of calico and then apply a new layer of coating. Try to smooth as much as possible. Wait for the coating to dry. It can take several hours or even a full day. Then you can sand the repair area and then repaint your ceiling. It should be noted that it is difficult to repaint only the repaired crack. Generally, the entire ceiling must be repainted to avoid demarcation. Throughout the work, we recommend that you protect your furniture, walls and floors well, but also protect yourself well. Make sure you wear protective glasses, secure your stepladder, have all the tools at hand, etc.
